Two common allergy medications could cause severe reaction to some people who stop using it.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States published an alert related to cetirizin (Zyrtec) or levocetirizin (XYZAL), warning that patients who stop taking it after use in the long term may experience a “rare but serious itching”, a condition called Pritus.
The itch was reported by people who used medicines every day for months or years, and then stopped using them.

In total, 209 cases were reported worldwide (197 in the USA) between April 25, 2017 and July 6, 2023.
“This number includes only reports sent to the FDA, so there may be additional cases we do not know,” the agency stated in the statement.

“The reported cases were rare, but sometimes severe, with patients with widespread and severe itching who required medical intervention.”
Many reports described a “significant and persistent impact on quality of life and operating ability,” said the FDA.

In most cases (90%), restarting the drug resolved the severe itching. Some (38%) succeeded with gradual reduction after restarting.
Medicines are available in both recipe and reception versions.

The FDA said it will update the prescription information of the medicines to include a warning of the itching risk and will also ask the manufacturers to add the information to the label of drugs for free sale versions.

The drugs are also approved as a treatment for allergies throughout the year and chronic housing in patients of 6 months and more.
People who experience severe itching after the cessation of these medicines must contact a healthcare professional, advised the FDA.

“People planning the long -term use of cetirizin or levocetyrhizin, especially for more than a few months, should discuss the advantages and risks to your healthcare professional, which can provide advice based on your personal needs,” said the agency.
Other common side effects of cetirizin and levocetirizin include fatigue, drowsiness, cough, dry mouth, fever, throat, NASA, diarrhea and vomiting, according to the FDA.

Dr. Marc Siegel, a clinical professor of medicine at Nyu Langone Health and Fox News Senior Medical Analyst, said that these medicines are “very effective” to relieve allergy symptoms.
